Beta Blast 2012

BETA BLAST 2012 was a huge success!! The chapter’s annual philanthropy raising money for the ‘Dan Marino Foundation’ was held for 3 consecutive days with 6 sororities competing. The competition was fierce…..FIERCE!!! Never before have the brothers experienced such a dedicated showing (rumour has it girls started fighting over Coin Wars). Moreover, the entire Beta suite has been transformed with posters, toys, and cupcakes/baked goods from all the different sororities. Ultimately, ADPi defended their title for a 2nd straight year, with Zeta coming in a close 2nd, and Tri Delta 3rd. Over $3,000+ was raised!

Greek Week: 2nd Place Overall

The last two weeks have been incredibly busy for the Eta Beta chapter! The chapter worked extremely hard and passionately to defend their Greek Week title, but ultimately ended with a 2nd place victory. This was the first year in U.M. history that Greek Week was a team competition (Beta was paired with Tri Delta sorority and MGC [Multicultural Greek Council]) as the “RED team”. It was a very close contest and no one was quite sure how the new system would turn out. The “Orange Team” (DPHiE and Phi Delta Theta) came out in 1st. The brothers still have a lot to be proud of with their dedication and effort.

The University of Miami Chapters of Delta Phi Epsilon and Beta Theta Pi had a very successful and fun mixer on a boat on Thursday, September 8 of the current year. Everyone had a great time, with great company, good music and the best friends men can have; lots of people dancing and enjoying the evening responsibly.
Special Thanks to our Social Chair: Nathaniel Touboul and the lovely ladies of DPhiE for such a special event.

Semester Recap - Note from President

As the semester winds down to a close, I thought I’d take this opportunity to briefly highlight some of the successes of the chapter. This was an incredible Fall semester for the chapter, which ought to go down in Beta history. I was sitting in a room last weekend in Miami with a Zeta, DG, and DPhiE, and they all unanimously and simultaneously agreed: “Beta is the best fraternity on campus.” I had never felt more proud in my life to hear that.

Eta Beta accomplished:
-Zeta Dodgeball Champions
-Kappa Volleyball Champions
-DPhiE ‘Deepher Dudes’ Champions

Successfully initiated a strong “Theta Class”

Elected Navid Ajabshir as the new Beta President

The brothers also successfully fundraised near 8,000 dollars to bring and co-sponsor a FREE Wiz Khalifa concert on campus, to which 4,500 people showed.

This was also a banner year for the Eta Beta Alumni Association, which got approved as a 501(c )(3) non-profit charity by the IRS and officially kicked off its 2010-2011 first annual fundraising campaign. I want to thank the Board of Trustees for all their hard work thus far in developing our campaign.

The brothers are already gearing up for what is expected to be their biggest recruitment in the chapter’s history, with a mark of THIRTY (30) new brothers for the Spring pledge class.

As you can see…..BETA THETA PI at the U is going….
Stay tuned for news about a Spring Alumni Reunion event!

Yours in kai,
Peter Darrow
President, Alumni Association

Semi-Formal

The brothers threw a very successful Semi-Formal at the Hyatt Regency, in downtown Coral Gables on Saturday evening, Dec. 4th. Roughly 35 brothers showed, all with gorgeous dates. There was non-stop dancing for 4 hours.

December 06, 2010

Wiz Khalifa Concert

Wiz Khalifa

On Friday, December 3 Beta Theta Pi finally brought Wiz Khalifa to campus in a concert free to all UM students. With opening acts including John Payne, J Nics and Mayday many referred to it as the second homecoming concert. Not only was it the biggest fund raising effort ever by the Eta Beta chapter, raising $8,000 in less than 3 months, but by far the most widespread PR campaign to date.

Pictured above are pledge educator Karam Basra, chapter president Navid Ajabshir and risk manager Bijan Heravi hanging out with Wiz Khalifa before the After School Special.

Eta Beta Wins AGLO Awards!

The Eta Beta chapter of Beta Theta Pi recently won several major A.G.L.O. awards for 2009 at the University of Miami. A.G.L.O, which stands for the ‘Association of Greek Letter Organizations’, is the annual benefit recognizing outstanding achievement by individual chapters on campus. It is taken very seriously by all Greek organizations, and a barometer of success for any Fraternity or Sorority (similar to winning Greek Week by reputation). This year Eta Beta won:

-IFC Outstanding Campus Involvement
-GAMMA Risk Management Award
-IFC Most Outstanding Chapter (co-awarded to BETA and SAE)
-IFC Outstanding Chapter President (Josh Weis)

Congratulations on this major accomplishment!

The brothers will be enjoying a FREE mixer from the sisters of Delta Delta Delta next semester as an award for their accomplishment.

On another note, this latest victory for the Eta Beta chapter builds upon a very impressive and unique streak of accomplishment that all Alumni should be proud of…the brothers of Eta Beta have NOT LOST a single all-Greek competition (major sorority philanthropy or Greek Week) dating back to SPRING 2009!! Yes, that is correct….the chapter has not lost a MAJOR philanthropy or Greek Week event for over a year.  This includes Kappa Kappa Gamma champs, Greek Week champs (twice), Delta Gamma Anchorbowl champs, Delta Phi Epsilon champs, and Tri Delta champs. THIS IS AN INCREDIBLE STREAK! WAY TO GO ETA BETA, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! Next on the list…ADPi ‘Piathlon’ next week. Stay tuned.

GO BETA! kai

Eta Class Initiation

On the eighth day of the fourth month of the year two thousand and ten, 19 earnest young men will begin their initiation process into this great and good chapter of Beta Theta Pi. What will officially become known as ‘Eta Class’, all the pledges have worked hard and met their requirements for induction into the rolls of the Eta Beta chapter.  The ceremonies will take place over three days, starting tonight and following Friday and Saturday evenings. Congratulations to Brothers Mike Jones ’12 and Jeff Pitman ’12 for their dedication as Co-Pledge Educators this semester. All of the alumni welcome these future leaders into our chapter, and hold high expectations for their service over the next four years. They will serve us proudly. Congratulations Eta Class!

Yours in kai

Tri Delta 'Frats At Bat'

Starting this Wednesday, the brothers of Eta Beta will compete in Tri Delta’s ‘Frats at Bat’ annual philanthropy, raising Cancer funding for the kids of St. Jude’s Hospital. Significant changes this year have extended the competition from one to three days, and for the first time includes a sister auction. As usual, the brothers will also be required to field a 9-man softball team.  Last year the brothers placed 3rd overall (without even winning a single game).  Let’s see if they can be champs this year!  The schedule is as follows:

Wednesday April 7th-
Delta Dash, All day on UM Campus

Thursday April 8th-
Mr. Trident Contest
Sister Auction

Friday April 9th-
Frats at Bat Softball Tournament

Relay For Life -- PHOTOS ADDED

I write this as I am currently sitting at the Eta Beta station for this year’s Relay For Life festival, fundraising for Cancer research.  This year over 30 University of Miami organizations are participating, covering the entire Stanford Circle drive.   The brothers are once again operating their "Jail & Bail" station, where participants are "jailed" for an indefinite duration of time before donating money to be "released".  Water-balloons as well as shaving cream "pies" are flying through the air and thrown by any desired volunteers at the contestants.  They are representing the country of Costa Rica, in honor of fellow Brother Luis Montoya ’11.

Last year the brothers raised $1,700, and they expect to surpass that mark this year with at least $2,000 raised total.  This is a great accomplishment and certainly puts Eta Beta in the Top 5 fundraisers overall.  Great job bros!

Greek Week: Day 4

"Ridiculous" can only begin to describe the performance of this year’s Greek Week O-Cheer event.  Written by Jason Stern ‘10, the brothers of Eta Beta simply blew away the other competition last night.  Held from 9:00-10:30pm last night on ’The Rock,’ every fraternity and sorority was well-represented.  Snaps to other strong performances last night by the brothers of SAE and SigEp, and the sisters of Zeta Tau Alpha.  Saturday is the final day of Greek Week, with ‘Olympic Day’ and closing ceremonies beginning at 11:00am on the IM fields. Go watch the performance under the ‘Videos’ section.  GO BETA!

Greek Week: Day 2

Tuesday wrapped up another strong day for the Eta Beta chapter! Today was the chapter’s Blood Drive "efficiency day", and participation was very strong.  At nighttime in the Comm School pavilion, Luis Montoya ‘11 represented Beta in the Greek God & Goddess competition.  He was judged on his professional resume as well as his talent (Luis played guitar and sang a song about all the sororities at U.M.).  He finished in 2nd place overall, and attendance was maxed out on points! Congrats to Luis and all the brothers! Wednesday is the final day of Coin Wars and ’Shirt Day’.

Final standings for Greek God & Goddess 2010 are:

Fraternities: #1 SAE, #2 BETA, #3 Phi Delta

Sororities: #1 Delta Gamma, #2 ADPi, #3 Tri Delta

Greek Week: Day 1

The stage is set, the brothers are ready, and the time has come to repeat!  After opening ceremonies, Monday marked the official first day of competition! Attendance was strong, and Eta Beta quickly topped off the "jug" for coin wars to prevent other fraternities from putting anything negative in. Tuesday is Blood Drive efficiency day (with a lot of points up for grabs), and Luis Montoya ’11 will be representing BETA Tuesday night in Greek God & Goddess competition! Preparations continue for an amazing O-Cheer Thursday night. Keep checking for more Greek Week updates! GO BETA!

Keystone

This past weekend the Executive Board of the Eta Beta Chapter loaded up several cars and made the drive up north to Jacksonville, Florida for Beta Theta Pi’s Southeast Keystone Conference.  The brothers were loud and proud in representing The U, but also returned to Miami with a renewed vision for where this Chapter should be heading.  Through goalsetting sessions, talking with other Chapters of Beta Theta Pi, and several officer breakout sessions, the brothers were reminded of the principles for which this fraternity stands for, and discussed ways to improve and better the Chapter.

A lot of fun was had by all involved.  The southern Chapters (University of Alabama and University of Tennessee, for examples) were rocking the polos and looking mighty "fratty".  The Eta Beta Chapter was also reunited with Eta Beta Alumnus Clark Rinehart, now a Chapter Advisor for the University of North Carolina’s Eta Chapter.  And while the Executive Board has always been close, this weekend — in both the serious times and the fun times — brought them even closer together and strengthened the bonds of brotherhood even tighter.  It was a weekend well-spent.

Congratulations 'Eta Class', Spring 2010!

In our largest and most successful rush ever, Rush Co-Chairs John Alexander ‘10 and Michael Eder ’11 recruited 21 pledge-brothers to form ’Eta Class’! It was the first ever "deferred recruitment", and we placed Top 3 in all fraternities!  More importantly, they recruited only top-quality men, with many rushes not getting bids. Snaps to Eta Beta!
